Solar to power 200 homes in Alice Springs

alice_spring_solar ONE of the country’s largest solar power stations will be built in Alice Springs, supplying clean energy to at least 200 homes each year.

The power station will have 26 solar concentrating dishes – 14m high – using the same technology that powers satellites and space stations.

Alice Springs residents will be given the option to purchase “green power” at a premium price from the solar farm.

The $6.6 million Ilparpa Solar Power Station will generate more than 1800 megawatt hours of clean energy each year – enough to power at least 200 Alice Springs homes.

It is expected to reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by 1300 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

Construction of the solar farm will start in mid-2009 and will begin contributing to the power grid by early 2010.

Lingiari MHR Warren Snowdon said the Federal Government was contributing $3.3 million as part of the Solar Cities program.

Alice Solar City general manager Brian Elmer said more than 3400sqm of solar panels would slowly turn and track the sun.
